Mr Oliver Schindler
Professional statement
Mr Oliver Schindler is a highly respected lower limb surgeon with an extensive international background. After completion of his training, he was appointed Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at North Bristol NHS Trust in 1999 but left the NHS a few years later to pursue his special interests in hip and knee disorders. He currently practises at the Chesterfield Nuffield Hospital in Bristol, which, in its new premisses, offers state-of-the-art facilities.
He is a Fellow of Royal College of Surgeons of England, an elected member of the Faculty of Sports & Exercise Medicine in Edinburgh, and holder of a PhD in Sports Medicine. In addition, he is a member of the British Hip Society, the British Association of Surgery of the Knee, and the Girdlestone Orthopaedic Society in Oxford. His postgraduate training spans renowned institutions in Oxford, Edinburgh, London, Bristol, Australia, Russia, and the US, giving him a comprehensive and specialist perspective in orthopaedic surgery.
Mr Schindler’s clinical approach centres on joint preservation and tailored treatment plans, particularly for patients with cartilage damage, ligament instability, and early degenerative joint disease. He specialises in selective resurfacing procedures, employing mobile bearing systems for partial knee replacements.
His choice of total knee implants focuses on reproducing natural knee kinematics thereby emulating the movement pattern of the native knee. For hip surgery, he advocates the use of ceramic and titanium implants due to their superior durability and biomechanical performance. His methods aim to match the treatment precisely to the severity and location of the condition, promoting optimal recovery and joint function.
Throughout his career, Mr Schindler has remained deeply committed to research and academic advancement. He has been awarded prestigious international accolades including the British Orthopaedic Association ASG-Fellowship and the American Knee Society Insall-Fellowship. He wrote a number of book chapters and has published widely on key topics in hip and knee surgery.
He actively contributes to various orthopaedic societies and serves as reviewer for a number of respected journals such as The Knee and Knee Surgery Sports Traumatology & Arthroscopy. His current research interests include causes of anterior knee pain, pros and cons of primary patella resurfacing, and improvements in pre-operative implant size determination in total hip arthroplasty.

- Mr Schindler is very kind man and makes you feel at ease right away, He explains everything in detail about your operation so I immediately felt in safe hands. After my operation I was in excellent care of all the nursing staff. It was a great surprise to me the size of the scar which is very small due to very precise incision of the surgeon. Also follow up appointments and X-rays to check on progress. I’m very pleased with the outcome.
