Professional statement
Dr Panicos Shangaris is a consultant in obstetrics and maternal-fetal medicine with over 18 years of experience guiding women and families through all stages of pregnancy. He is internationally recognised for his expertise in managing complex and high-risk pregnancies and is particularly known for his compassionate, patient-centred approach.
Dr Shangaris offers specialist care in preconception counselling, early pregnancy assessment, advanced fetal diagnostics, and the management of a wide range of maternal and fetal conditions. His clinical services cover both NHS and private settings, where he provides tailored maternity care, including antenatal consultations, non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT), cervical length surveillance, and personalised delivery planning—including vaginal birth and elective caesarean section. He is also skilled in preventive strategies for preterm birth, such as progesterone therapy and cervical cerclage.
After graduating from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 2005, Dr Shangaris completed foundation and specialty training in London, working at institutions including University College London, the Royal Free, Barnet, North Middlesex, and later King’s College and St. Thomas’ Hospitals. During his subspecialty training in maternal and fetal medicine, he was mentored by globally recognised leaders in fetal medicine.
He holds a Master’s degree in Fetal Medicine and Prenatal Genetics from University College London (UCL), awarded with distinction. He was subsequently awarded the prestigious Wellcome Trust SPARKS Research Training Fellowship, which enabled him to undertake a PhD at UCL focused on innovative fetal therapies for genetic blood disorders, including fetal stem cell transplantation and gene therapy.
In his role as Senior Clinical Lecturer at King’s College London, Dr Shangaris leads pioneering research aimed at improving pregnancy outcomes. His academic interests lie in the development of novel diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for at-risk pregnancies, particularly those complicated by fetal anomalies, preterm labour, or maternal comorbidities. He has received funding from national and international research bodies including the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), Academy of Medical Sciences, and the Fetal Medicine Foundation.
Dr Shangaris is widely published in peer-reviewed journals and actively mentors medical students, junior doctors, and postgraduate researchers. His work bridges cutting-edge academic science with hands-on clinical excellence, ensuring that every patient benefits from the latest evidence-based care.
Renowned for his calm, empathetic manner, Dr Shangaris takes time to listen and respond to each patient’s concerns. He believes in equipping women with the knowledge and confidence they need to make informed decisions—supporting them with clarity and reassurance through even the most complex pregnancies.
