Dr Parijat De

Dr Parijat De is a leading consultant endocrinologist who practises privately at Harborne Hospital and his NHS base is at City Hospital, Birmingham where he has practised since 2003.

With specialist interests in diabetes, endocrinology, and lipid metabolism. He has pioneered nurse-led diabetic renal review clinics across the Birmingham area and is actively involved in research and projects focused on diabetic nephropathy. Additionally, he has established several community-based diabetes clinics in Birmingham, which were among the first of their kind in the UK.

Dr De has held several key leadership roles, including Trust Clinical Governance Lead (2006–2010) and Royal College Tutor (2010–2014). As clinical lead for Diabetes and Endocrinology, he has driven significant improvements both locally and nationally. He led the in-patient diabetes team as the THINK GLUCOSE Lead and a Diabetes UK Clinical Champion, initiating programmes such as the “Whole Systems Approach to Improving Diabetes Safety in Hospitals” and the “DIABETES SAFE ACCREDITED WARDS.” These initiatives have received national recognition—becoming finalists for the HSJ and PSCA Awards in 2016 and the BMJ Awards in 2018—due to their impact on reducing medication errors and hospital length of stay.

Dr De has also worked closely with the local CCG to develop and expand the award-winning Diabetes Integrated Community Service (DICE) across 89 GP practices. This service brings diabetes care closer to patients’ homes, enhances primary care skills, and has achieved high satisfaction among GPs and patients, while generating cost savings of over £500,000. In recognition of his contributions to DICE and inpatient diabetes care, he was named National Diabetes Healthcare Professional of the Year at the Quality in Care Awards 2016.
