Professional statement

Mr Paul Haslam is a highly experienced consultant orthopaedic surgeon specialising in knee surgery, knee pain and sports injuries, alongside paediatric orthopaedics, knee replacements and arthroscopic procedures including arthroscopic debridement of Baker´s Cyst. He privately practises at Thornbury Hospital, Park Hill Hospital, and The Coriel Clinic, while his NHS base is Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Sheffield Children’s Hospital

His expertise includes advanced surgical techniques such as total and partial knee replacement, ACL reconstruction, and procedures for recurrent patella dislocation including medial patellofemoral ligament reconstruction. He is skilled in arthroscopic knee surgery, including meniscal repair and meniscectomy, as well as osteotomies and ligament reconstructions. A significant proportion of his work is paediatric knee surgery, where he is actively involved in managing congenital and traumatic knee conditions, and he is an integral part of the regional and national knee service at Sheffield Children’s Hospital.

Mr Haslam trained at the University of Sheffield, qualifying in 1994, and undertook surgical training in South Yorkshire. He gained further specialist experience through prestigious fellowships in Melbourne, Auckland, and Sydney before returning to the UK in 2006 to take up his NHS post. Over the years, he has performed over 1,000 knee replacements and 1,000 anterior cruciate ligament reconstructions, establishing himself as a trusted expert in his field.

In addition to his clinical work, Mr Haslam has been actively involved in education and training throughout his career. He holds the position of honorary senior clinical lecturer at the University of Sheffield and has taught knee examination techniques nationally for over a decade. He has been invited to join the faculty of various national and international courses, including the second International Paediatric Knee Course. He is also committed to mentoring the next generation of surgeons, supervising trainees and international fellows to gain experience in knee surgery.

Mr Haslam is a dedicated advocate for patient safety and continuous improvement. He has implemented multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings in his practice to peer-review cases and improve surgical outcomes. His leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic as clinical director of his NHS trust, ensured the department's resilience while maintaining high standards of care.

Mr Haslam stays at the forefront of advancements in knee surgery by regularly attending courses and collaborating with other specialists. He has visited renowned centres, such as Toulouse, to refine his techniques and actively participates in research, particularly in paediatric cruciate ligament deficiency. He is one of the only surgeons that can regularly operate on Baker’s cysts, and recently presented his series of 52 patients successfully treated for this condition using a keyhole technique. He is a member of several professional organisations, including the British Orthopaedic Association, the British Association for Surgery of the Knee, and the European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery & Arthroscopy.
