Mr Paul Haslam

Mr Paul Haslam is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon with 20 years of experience, specialising in knee surgery, sports injuries and paediatric knee conditions. He offers comprehensive treatment for knee pain, from non-surgical care through to complex ligament reconstruction and knee replacement. He practises privately at The Coriel Clinic in Doncaster and Thornbury Hospital in Sheffield. His NHS practice is based at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Sheffield Children’s Hospital.

Mr Haslam has a particular interest in the arthroscopic treatment of symptomatic Baker’s cysts. He has performed more than 70 keyhole procedures for this condition and presented results from his series at BOSTAA in 2024. His experience attracts patients from across the UK seeking specialist assessment and treatment. His approach combines assessment of the cyst with careful consideration of the underlying knee problem, with surgery offered where appropriate.

His wider practice includes total and partial knee replacement, ACL reconstruction, meniscal repair, osteotomy and surgery for recurrent kneecap dislocation, including medial patellofemoral ligament reconstruction. He has performed more than 2,000 knee replacements and 1,000 ACL reconstructions.

Paediatric knee surgery forms a significant part of his work. At Sheffield Children’s Hospital, he contributes to a specialist service treating children and adolescents with congenital knee conditions, ligament injuries and patellar instability. He is also involved in research into congenital cruciate ligament deficiency.

Mr Haslam qualified from the University of Sheffield in 1994 and completed his surgical training in South Yorkshire. He undertook specialist fellowships in Melbourne, Auckland and Sydney, before returning to the UK to take up his consultant post in 2006. He now brings more than 30 years of medical experience to his practice.

Alongside his clinical work, Mr Haslam is an honorary senior clinical lecturer at the University of Sheffield. He has taught knee examination techniques nationally for more than a decade and has served on the faculty of national and international surgical courses, including the International Paediatric Knee Course. He supervises surgical trainees and international fellows, sharing his experience in adult and paediatric knee surgery.

Patient safety, thoughtful decision-making and continuous improvement are central to his practice. He has introduced multidisciplinary case-review meetings to support shared clinical decisions and previously served as clinical director during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mr Haslam continues to develop his practice through research, specialist courses and collaboration with other knee surgeons. He is a member of the British Orthopaedic Association, the British Association for Surgery of the Knee, and the European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy.
