Mr Paul MacKenzie is a consultant surgeon specialising in general and upper gastrointestinal (GI) surgery. He has expertise in gallbladder surgery, hernia repair and keyhole (minimal access) surgery, alongside anti-reflux surgery, upper GI endoscopy and abdominal hernia. He privately practises at Goring Hall Hospital, part of Circle Health Group, and his NHS base is University Hospitals Sussex NHS Trust.
Mr MacKenzie completed surgical rotations at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital after qualifying in medicine from the Universities of Exeter and Plymouth in 2010. He then went on to join the Kent, Surrey, and Sussex Higher Surgical Training Programme in 2014. His training in upper GI surgery took place at the Royal Surrey County Hospital and St Richard’s Hospital in Chichester. He also undertook a three-year research fellowship at the Minimal Access Therapy Training Unit (MATTU) in Guildford, earning his Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in 2022.
Mr MacKenzie, has a particular interest in the management of gallstone disease, hernia and abdominal wall surgery and functional upper GI disorders such as reflux and swallowing difficulties. He is highly experienced in open and laparoscopic surgical techniques for common intra-abdominal conditions. He is also a JAG-certified upper GI endoscopist and performs minor skin and soft tissue procedures.
Mr MacKenzie is actively involved in medical education and surgical training. He's an educational and clinical supervisor, teaches for the Royal College of Surgeons of England, a member of national selection panels for surgical trainees, and an examiner at Brighton and Sussex Medical School. He also leads key surgical initiatives, serving as the 'Safe Cholecystectomy' lead and the general surgery lead for the 'Getting it Right First Time' (GIRFT) programme at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Trust.
