Professional statement
Mr Paul Tierney is a senior consultant ENT surgeon at University Hospitals Bristol, specialising in the care of adults and children with conditions affecting all aspects of ear, nose and throat surgery. Mr Tierney has specialist training and expertise in nasal and sinus surgery, including the treatment of nasal obstruction and the endoscopic management of sinus disease and sinusitis.
Mr Tierney undertook international fellowship training in head and neck surgery, as well as in the management of throat, swallowing, voice, thyroid and salivary gland disorders in both adults and children. He qualified from Oxford University in 1989 after attending Magdalen College, graduating with a medical degree and an MA in Physiological Sciences. He began his ENT career with posts at St Mary’s Hospital, London, and the Royal Marsden Hospital.
His specialist registrar training was completed at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals, with additional experience gained at Great Ormond Street Hospital. He subsequently undertook an international fellowship in Brisbane with Professor Coman at one of the largest head and neck units in the world, before being appointed as a consultant ENT surgeon in Bristol in 2002.
Prior to completing his training, Mr Tierney was awarded the Royal Society of Medicine Gold Medal in Laryngology for achieving the highest mark in the Intercollegiate Fellowship Examination. Over the past 23 years, Mr Paul Tierney has been a core member of the head and neck multidisciplinary team in Bristol.
He has also served as clinical lead for the ENT department, chairman of the Head and Neck Cancer Network, honorary senior lecturer at Bristol University, and specialty training director for the Severn Deanery. In addition, Mr Tierney has served on the national committee of the British Laryngological Association.
Mr Tierney works closely with his surgical and medical colleagues to provide a holistic approach to patient care, which is particularly important in the management of adults and children with hearing, swallowing and voice disorders.
He remains actively involved in training and education, and many consultant surgeons in the region have been trained within his department. He has played a key role in this through his work as training programme director and specialty tutor at University Hospitals Bristol.
