Mr Praveen Kumar

Mr Praveen Kumar is a highly experienced consultant ophthalmologist based in Berkshire, practising at Circle Reading Hospital. He specialises in cataract surgery, including clear lens extraction and premium intraocular lens implantation (multifocal, toric and extended depth of focus lenses), as well as the diagnosis and management of medical retinal conditions such as age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. He also has extensive expertise in laser treatments, including YAG capsulotomy, and the management of acute eye conditions and emergencies.

Mr Kumar graduated with an MBBS from the University of Madras before completing his residency in ophthalmology at the prestigious Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), where he also obtained both a Diploma and a Master’s degree in Ophthalmology. He went on to undertake a fellowship at the renowned Aravind Eye Hospital, where he refined his surgical skills in cataract and complex retinal disease management. He began his UK career with a clinical attachment at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, followed by specialist training across leading ophthalmic centres in the UK. Since 2009, he has worked as an NHS Consultant, further enhancing his expertise with an additional fellowship in complex cataract surgery in Jersey.

Alongside his clinical practice, Mr Kumar is a member of several esteemed professional bodies, including the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and the European Society of Retinal Specialists. He is a GMC-recognised trainer and is actively involved in teaching and mentoring junior doctors, optometrists, orthoptists and ophthalmic nurses. As Clinical Lead for age-related macular degeneration, he is committed to delivering advanced, evidence-based and patient-centred care, ensuring the highest standards of treatment and outcomes for his patients.
