Professional statement

Professor Rahul Bhattacharyya is a leading consultant orthopaedic specialist knee surgeon with a national and international reputation based in Glasgow and London. His areas of expertise include sports knee injuries including ACL reconstruction (personalized to the patients’ needs), meniscus repair, cartilage repair, patella tendonitis, patella instability surgery and osteotomies to realign the knee and preserve the joint. In patients with established arthritis he specializes in partial and total knee replacements. He also offers knee joint injections including PRP, hyaluronic acid and steroids for the suitable patient.


Notably, Prof. Bhattacharyya is one of the few surgeons in Scotland trained to treat meniscal deficiency with meniscal allograft transplantation and has helped set up a regional service for this procedure.


Prof. Bhattacharyya consults privately at Ross Hall Hospital, Glasgow and The Wellington Hospital(Platinum Medical Centre), London. Furthermore, he is also an executive committee member of the British Association for Surgery of the Knee. 


With over 15 years’ experience, Prof. Bhattacharyya is highly qualified, with an MBBS (Honours) from the University of Sheffield, an MSc in Surgical Sciences (Distinction) from the University of Edinburgh, an MD (Research) from Imperial College London and FRCS (Orth) from the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh. He undertook his specialist orthopaedic training in the West of Scotland Deanery, UK before completing two prestigious sub-specialty fellowships; in knee and trauma surgery at King’s College Hospital, London and in sports knee surgery with the renowned Tim Spalding and Pete Thompson in Coventry, UK.


Prof. Bhattacharyya also holds the position of Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at Imperial College London and University of Glasgow. He has published and presented extensively at both national and international conferences, and is involved in biomechanics, clinical and simulation (education) research in knee surgery.

  • Had a full knee replacement with Mr Bhattacharyya went extremely well up walking 2 miles per day 8 weeks after surgery doing the exercises that your given by physio are most important to do so keep at it and you will be glad you did it.
