Professor Rakesh Heer

Professor Rakesh Heer is an internationally renowned consultant urologist and Chair of Urology at Imperial College London. With three decades of experience across the NHS and private practice, he is widely recognised as one of the UK's top specialists in prostate cancer, robotic surgery and day-case focal therapy.

Professor Heer serves as Chairman of NICE Clinical Guideline committees and is the recipient of the prestigious Royal College of Surgeons' Hunterian Professorship and the highest-ranked National Clinical Excellence Award. His work includes contributing to the development of clinical guidelines and advancing the standards of urological care.

Professor Heer provides direct access to advanced prostate cancer care, including assessment and treatment for prostate cancer, offering a range of diagnostic and treatment options tailored to each patient's individual circumstances.

His areas of expertise include:

• Precision prostate cancer diagnostics: Rapid PSA testing, high-definition multiparametric MRI (mpMRI) and targeted fusion biopsies for fast, ultra accurate results.
• Robotic radical prostatectomy: Professor Heer has performed over 1,000 robotic procedures. He uses advanced surgical techniques, including Retzius-sparing prostatectomy, complete urethral preservation and NeuroSAFE, with the aim of preserving urinary continence and erectile function following surgery.
• Day-case focal therapy: He offers minimally invasive treatments for selected patients with prostate cancer, including high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) and NanoKnife (irreversible electroporation). These treatments target cancerous tissue while aiming to preserve surrounding healthy tissue and maintain quality of life, urinary continence and erectile function.

His experience in both robotic surgery and focal therapy enables him to discuss different treatment approaches with patients, taking into account their diagnosis, individual circumstances and preferences.

In addition to his specialist interest in prostate cancer, Professor Heer provides assessment and treatment for a range of general urological conditions affecting men and women.

• Blood in the urine (haematuria): Investigation and diagnosis of blood in the urine.
• Urinary symptoms and incontinence: Assessment of urinary frequency, urgency, weak urine stream, nocturia (waking at night to urinate) and urinary incontinence.
• Men's health and testicular conditions: Assessment of testicular lumps, other testicular concerns and erectile dysfunction.
• Recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs): Investigation and management of recurrent infections.
• Vasectomy: Provision of vasectomy using a no-scalpel technique under local anaesthetic.
