Dr Ravi Misra is a consultant gastroenterologist and endoscopist with a specialist focus on Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). He is the Director of the IBD Unit at St Mark’s Hospital, London—the largest service of its kind in the UK and an internationally recognised centre for the treatment of bowel disease.
Dr Misra graduated from Imperial College London in 2005, where he also completed an intercalated BSc in Surgical Science. His early medical training took place on the Hammersmith Hospitals rotation, before progressing to specialist training on the prestigious North West London programme. He went on to complete an advanced endoscopy fellowship at St Mark’s Hospital, developing expertise in both diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy. He now runs a complex tertiary IBD service, managing referrals from across the south of England.
Alongside his clinical practice, Dr Misra is a dedicated educator and researcher. He is Director of Postgraduate Education at St Mark’s Hospital and leads the internationally attended St Mark’s Postgraduate Teaching Course. He is also an Honorary Senior Lecturer at Imperial College London, where he teaches on the Gastroenterology BSc course.
Dr Misra was awarded a PhD from Imperial College London for his research with the Centre for Digestive Health, focusing on how the microbiome changes in IBD. He has a particular interest in the role of diet in newly diagnosed IBD patients. His work has been widely recognised, with presentations at major international conferences and publications in respected peer-reviewed journals.
He has been elected to the European Crohn’s and Colitis Organisation (ECCO), the world’s largest society dedicated to IBD, where he has contributed to the development of clinical guidelines and delivered teaching at international workshops. He continues to maintain an active research portfolio as an Honorary Senior Lecturer at Imperial College, supervising PhD students and acting as principal investigator for national and commercial clinical trials. He is currently recruiting patients to both NIHR-funded and industry-sponsored studies.
In his clinical work, Dr Misra manages the full spectrum of gastrointestinal disorders, including bloating, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), constipation, reflux, abdominal pain, polyps and cancers, with particular expertise in IBD and advanced endoscopy. He is fluent in Hindi and Urdu, and is strongly committed to a patient-centred approach, ensuring that care is based on listening, shared decision-making, and tailored treatment plans.
