Dr Ray Mathew is a leading consultant gastroenterologist with extensive expertise in hepatobiliary and pancreatic medicine, as well as interventional endoscopy. He specialises in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), acid reflux and gastroscopy, alongside gastrointestinal endoscopy, endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) and pancreatic cancer. He privately practises at Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital, while his NHS base is Shrewsbury and Telford NHS Trust.
Dr Mathew worked previously at the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust and the former Mid Staffordshire NHS FT. At these organisations, he was the clinical director of gastroenterology, the clinical director of endoscopy and lead clinician for cancer. He has assisted in the design and build of three JAG-accredited endoscopy units, and plays an active role in the local and regional Endoscopy and Cancer service restoration, recovery and redesign.
Dr Mathew has established a significant clinical practice in the management of acid reflux, inflammatory bowel disease, liver disorders, irritable bowel syndrome, and gastrointestinal cancers. His specialist interests include the diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal cancer, pancreatic disease, and disorders of the bile duct.
In addition to his clinical work, he is committed to advancing the field through clinical research and medical education. He is highly skilled in advanced procedures such as gastroscopy, colonoscopy, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), and is a faculty member at the Shrewsbury and Telford Endoscopy Training Centre.
