Professor Sandip Mitra is a distinguished consultant nephrologist based in Manchester. His area of expertise include chronic kidney disease (CKD), acute kidney injury (AKI), hypertension, electrolyte imbalances, polycystic kidney disease (PKD) and kidney stones. He is also highly experienced in managing proteinuria and haematuria.
Professor Mitra consults privately at Spire Manchester Hospital and Spire Regency Hospital Macclesfield. With over 35 years’ experience, he also practises at Manchester Royal Infirmary and serves as the clinical and governance lead for haemodialysis therapies at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, overseeing one of Europe’s largest home haemodialysis programmes. Professor Mitra also offers e-consultations to patients worldwide.
In addition, Professor Mitra holds the roles of vice-chair of the European Dialysis Board, expert advisor for dialysis at the National Horizon Scanning Centre and deputy director of NIHR MedTech Cooperative Devices for Dignity. Professor Mitra qualified from the University of Calcutta in 1990. He obtained an MD from University College London in 2004, before being elected a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 2008. His specialist nephrology training took place in Stevenage, Oxford, London and Manchester.
As a leading figure in academics, Professor Mitra is a Professor of Medicine at The University of Manchester and Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust. He has also made significant contributions to the field through a wide range of publications, patents and authored book chapters, as well as conducting in-depth research on uraemia and dialytic therapies at the Royal Free Medical School.
