Mr Sandro Di Simplicio

Mr Sandro Di Simplicio is a consultant ophthalmologist at Optical Express Laser Eye Surgery in Newcastle. He specialises in performing laser eye surgery, cataract surgery, lens replacement surgery, and YAG capsulotomy.

Mr Di Simplicio qualified in 2002 from the University of Siena before undertaking ophthalmology at the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University in Milan. During his training as a vitreoretinal surgeon, he gained experience at institutions such as King’s College London, University Hospital Southampton, and the Royal Victoria Infirmary. He has completed advanced fellowships in both Southampton and Bristol before his appointment as consultant in Newcastle, where he has been based since.

Mr Di Simplicio was the first consultant in an NHS Trust to incorporate the Ngenuity 3d Viewing System, and he remains passionate about integrating the newest technologies into his practice to improve procedures while maintaining precision and efficacy. He is also the first UK surgeon to regularly implement the new SING IMT Telescopic IOL for end-stage macular degeneration. Drawing on his wide and varied experience, Mr Di Somplicio has collaborated with Alcon’s Constellation Platform and has performed as a Key Opinion Leader in the development of the Active Sentry technology. In December 2021, he performed the first carbon-neutral cataract surgery in the world, and a year later, he became the first vitreoretinal surgeon in the UK to conduct live surgery at an international meeting.
