Mr Sergio Pagliarini is a highly experienced, skilled, and qualified consultant ophthalmic surgeon who posseses expertise in cataract surgery, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, vision loss and low vision, dry eyes, and macular and retinal diseases. He is currently practising at The Meriden Hospital, the Nuffield Health Warwickshire Hospital, and Edgbaston Eye Consultants.
Mr Pagliarini graduated with honours in medicine and obtained his specialist certificate in ophthalmology in Italy at the University of Bari in 1990. He then spent two years of clinical and research fellowships in medical retina at Moorfields Eye Hospital and St Thomas' Hospital focusing on age-related macular degeneration research. Thereafter, he continued carrying out clinical research at the University of Rome.
Notably, Mr Pagliarini has, up until now, published over 30 articles in scientific journals on macular degeneration and retinal diseases and has taken part in extreme environment research at the top of the Mount Rosa glacier in Italy, at 4,600m altitude. He is part of an international panel on standardisation of retinal imaging interpretation and is on the advisory boards of a host of established pharmaceutical companies.
Impressively, Mr Pagliarini himself conceptualised and opened a state-of-the-art macular unit in 2011 at the Hospital of St. Cross, Rugby, attracting multicenter clinical research in macular disease and providing an environment for pioneering new diagnostic imaging. Mr Pagliarini has received several clinical excellence awards and was nominated for Macular Society Clinical Services National Awards in 2001, 2012, and 2013.
