Miss Stephanie West is a highly-experienced consultant ophthalmologist practising in Southampton. Miss West treats both adults and children and specialises in cataract surgery, paediatric eye conditions including amblyopia and strabismus, adult squints, double vision and complex oculomotility disorders. She has been a consultant ophthalmologist at Southampton General Hospital since 2013, where she has previously been Clinical Director for Ophthalmology and CESR training program lead.
After graduating from Southampton University Medical School, Miss West completed specialist ophthalmology training in the highly regarded centres of Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham and The Bristol Eye Hospital. She subsequently undertook two years of subspecialty training in paediatric ophthalmology and strabismus including a prestigious fellowship at Sickkids, Toronto, for which she was awarded the JD Morin prize for best fellow. During a second fellowship at Moorfields Eye Hospital, Miss West gained extensive knowledge and training in treating children's eye diseases and squints.
In addition to her clinical work, Miss West participates in advisory boards for the pharmaceutical industry on Femto cataract surgery and treatment of retinopathy of prematurity.

- I booked an appointment with Miss Stephanie West through BUPA and clearly explained my daughter’s age and conditions. I was unexpectedly charged £100 just for an eye‑drop, and only afterwards told that she does not examine children under 3. The assessment was extremely brief and vague (still charged my BUPA account fully), and we were pushed toward another "specialist". Overall, it felt like a waste of time and money. I have reviewed our records and note that we saw your daughter in April 2024. At the time, we explained that Spire’s policy does not permit operations on children under the age of three. Where surgery is required, we always refer families to the most appropriate service for their child’s needs. According to the notes and correspondence sent at the time, we discussed in detail the likelihood of success, depending on the techniques available. I understand that you had an NHS appointment already scheduled for the following month with a specialist suitable for your daughter’s procedure. We appreciate your comments and have already taken steps to improve our processes, particularly regarding how we screen referrals made directly by insurance companies. Additionally, we have updated our Top Doctors profile to clarify that Spire does not permit operations on children under three years of age. - Dr West was very reassuring to a patient who has a phobia of needles and had a traumatic last experience undergoing eye surgery. Dr West took time to ensure I understood the process and was very much part of the decision making for my treatment.
