An expert’s overview of endometriosis
Endometriosis is a chronic inflammatory condition that primarily affects patients of reproductive age. This is largely because it is closely linked to the hormone oestrogen, which stimulates the growth and activity of the endometrial lining — the tissue that normally lines the inside of the uterus. In endometriosis, tissue similar to this lining is found outside the uterus, often in the pelvic area, including the ovaries and bowel, but potentially anywhere in the body. In this article, consultant gynaecologist Mr Ilyas Arshad thoroughly explains endometriosis.
