All about dense breast tissue and what is means for breast cancer

Dense breast tissue means that breast tissue is comprised of more fibrous and glandular tissue than fatty tissue. As mammograms rely on the differential appearance of fibrous tissue and fatty tissue to be accurate, if the breast tissue is dense, that may decrease the sensitivity of a standard 2D mammogram. Given the fact that dense breast tissue increases the likelihood of developing breast cancer and is difficult to diagnose on a standard mammogram, it may be worth discussing the value of additional supplemental screening to manage the risk of breast cancer on a case-by-case basis. In this article, a consultant oncoplastic breast surgeon discusses the complexities of dense breast tissue and the importance of screening.

What you should know about cleft surgery and rhinoplasty

A cleft is a congenital malformation of the face and skull that comes as a result of improper fusing when the foetus is developing in utero. It can affect the soft palate in the mouth (cleft palate), as well as extending to the gums and the muscles and tissue into the lip and below the nose (cleft lip). It is the most common birth defect in the UK, affecting one in 700 babies born. It can only be corrected by surgery, which is encouraged as it does pose difficulties for a patient’s tooth development and their ability to eat and speak.

    The ultimate guide to facelifts

A facelift is a type of surgical procedure that aims to rejuvenate the face and erase signs of ageing. Though there are many approaches to facelifts, most techniques achieve this by tightening the facial muscles, removing fat and excess tissue, and redistributing skin. In this article, a consultant plastic surgeon goes through the most common types of facelifts – full, deep plane, mini, mid, liquid, brow, jawline, thread, and fat transfer – so that patients can discover the best option for them.
