Back to basics: what to know about natural birth
Natural birth refers to the process of giving birth without medical intervention, such as epidurals, induction drugs, or caesarean section. It typically occurs vaginally and without the use of strong pain relief, though some methods of comfort like breathing techniques, warm water, massage, and movement are often used. While natural birth may happen at home, in a birthing centre, or in hospital, the emphasis remains on minimal intervention and allowing the body to lead the process. In this article, a consultant obstetrician explains why some parents may choose or need to undergo a natural birth, and what it entails.
