What are ovarian cysts?

 

Ovarian cysts could be normal physiologic structures that appear as part of normal ovarian function. Or it can be pathological, including cysts caused by endometriosis, and those caused by benign or malignant tumours

 

What are the symptoms of ovarian cysts?

 

Not all cysts cause symptoms. They might be found incidentally, just by doing an ultrasound scan. The common symptoms include pain, swelling and malignancies can be associated with bowel-like symptoms. They can affect fertility, if they're part of endometriosis or large in size. 

 

How are ovarian cysts diagnosed?

 

Diagnosis is made by taking a proper history, clinical examination and imaging studies like:

 

Ultrasound scans, or;

MRI scans

 

Sometimes blood tests are required to check ovarian tumour markers. 

 

How are ovarian cysts treated?

 

The treatment depends on the type of the cyst. Various options include: 

 

  • Only observation, or:
  • treatment with laparoscopy or;
  • open surgery for removal of either only the cyst, or the whole ovarian tube - it depends on each case, and the pros and cons of options and treatment. 

 

If malignancy is suspected, then treatment would include:

 

  • Total hysterectomy, and;
  • removal of both ovaries and tubes.
