How does Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) work for the treatment of depression?

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is used as a treatment for depression, and stimulates the specific regions of the brain that are responsible for regulating mood, motivation, and social skills, particularly the prefrontal cortex.

TMS uses magnetic pulses which reset brain patterns and pathways, and treat the root causes of depression.

TMS was approved by NICE in the UK in 2015 for the treatment of depression. TMS is widely used in the USA for the treatment of depression as it is approved by the FDA, and is also used throughout various European countries to also treat depression.

The first course lasts for 15 sessions of TMS treatment, followed by a consultation with a specialist.

Following the assessment, the second course of 15 sessions can be initiated.
