Mr Matthew Welck

Mr Matthew Welck is a consultant orthopaedic foot and ankle surgeon with an exclusive specialist practice dedicated to disorders of the foot and ankle. He is a consultant at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH), Stanmore, one of the UK's leading tertiary orthopaedic centres, and Honorary Associate Clinical Professor at University College London.

His principal clinical interests are total ankle replacement, complex foot and ankle reconstruction, revision surgery, Weight-Bearing CT-guided diagnosis and sports injuries, alongside foot and ankle arthritis and deformity correction. His NHS work is a tertiary referral practice, and a substantial proportion of his caseload consists of complex, deformed or previously-operated cases referred by other consultant surgeons. He also provides private specialist care to patients from across London, the UK and overseas, including recreational, professional and elite athletes.

He completed higher surgical training in trauma and orthopaedics, gaining the FRCS (Tr&Orth), followed by a double international fellowship in foot and ankle surgery that included a period in Baltimore, USA.

Matthew's research centres on the three-dimensional measurement of the foot under load. He uses Weight-Bearing CT to characterise deformity, to plan corrective surgery and to measure outcome objectively, and has extended this into patient-specific 3D-printed cutting guides and into total ankle replacement outcomes. He has published more than fifty peer-reviewed papers, has an h-index of 22 with over 1,700 citations, contributes book chapters, and has received the EFAS Best Publication Award, the David Marsh Prize and the Watson-Jones Prize.

He sits on the BOFAS Education Committee, lectures nationally and internationally, supervises research fellows and higher surgical trainees, serves as faculty on cadaveric and instructional courses, and contributes to postgraduate education for surgeons, trainees and allied healthcare professionals.

His philosophy is centred on evidence-based practice, shared decision-making and tailoring treatment to each patient's individual goals.
