Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is used to refer to diseases affecting the intestine. The most common are Crohn’s disease (CD), which can affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract from the mouth to the anus, and ulcerative colitis (UC), which predominantly affects the large bowel or colon. Symptoms can include diarrhoea, blood in the stools, abdominal pain, weight loss and bloating. A stool test called a faecal calprotectin can test for inflammation in the bowel but the diagnosis usually needs to be confirmed by a colonoscopy.
