Tummy tucks, or abdominoplasties, are a popular plastic surgery procedure; so much so, that according to the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS), they were up 130 per cent in 2022. However, there are always important questions to ask about the procedure, despite how common they are.

Mr Siva Kumar, a leading consultant plastic, aesthetic and reconstructive surgeon in Maidstone, East Grinstead, Sevenoaks and Surrey, is here to address five of some of the most frequently-asked questions about tummy tucks.

Am I a suitable candidate for a tummy tuck?

An ideal candidate for a tummy tuck is someone who is in good overall health, has realistic expectations about the outcome, and has excess fat and skin in the abdominal area that doesn’t respond to diet and exercise.

What’s the recovery period like?

The recovery period for a tummy tuck varies depending on the individual and the extent of the surgery. In general, patients will need to take one to two weeks off work and avoid strenuous activity and exercise for around six weeks.

Do I need to wear a compression garment?

Yes, you will need to wear a snug fitting compression garment for six weeks.  This helps to reduce the fluid build-up in the operated site.

Will there be scarring?

Yes. A tummy tuck involves making an incision, which results in some scarring. However, the incision is usually located low on the abdomen and can be hidden by clothing or swimwear. Additionally, there’s an additional incision around the belly button.

How long do the results of a tummy tuck last?

The results of a tummy tuck can be long-lasting, particularly if the patient maintains a healthy lifestyle with regular exercise and a balanced diet. However, weight gain or future pregnancies can affect the outcome of the procedure.
