There are many different types of treatments currently available that can improve the appearance of the skin. Two of the most popular of these treatments are neuromodulators and dermal fillers. In his latest online article, renowned otolaryngologist and facial plastic surgeon Mr Florian Bast explains these two treatments in detail.

What are neuromodulators and how do they work?

Essentially, a neuromodulator is a messenger released from a neuron (ending of a nerve) that affects the transmission of the signals between neurons (the information between two nerves). Neuromodulators used in aesthetic medicine temporarily block the information between nerve and muscle.

How long do neuromodulator treatments last?

The underlying muscle is given a tiny injection of the neuromodulator, which causes it to relax and progressively improve the appearance of the skin above it. The effects typically last about three months.

What are dermal fillers and how do they work?

Dermal fillers are gel-like substances injected under the skin. They are designed to effectively reduce the appearance of unwanted wrinkles, contour and create volume, revitalise the skin and create a smoother and/or fuller appearance. The most popular dermal fillers contain hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance that helps our skin to produce collagen and elastin.

Are dermal fillers safe?

Filler is still an unregulated market and a filler is not a drug. I only use fillers that have a drug license in the United States (FDA approved), as the filler market in the US is regulated.

Fillers are safe to use if it is applied by an experienced injector that can deal with possible complications, if the correct volume is used and if it is injected into the right anatomical area.

How long do dermal filler treatments last?

This all depends on the area treated and the product used. For example, lip fillers last up to one year and fillers that are used in the nose even longer.
