OCD treatments for Mental health

Obsessive compulsive disorder, otherwise referred to as OCD, is a type of anxiety disorder that manifests in people in the form of obsessions, compulsions (the need to perform rituals or actions to alleviate anxiety), and obtrusive, uncontrollable thoughts.

What are the symptoms of OCD?

The symptoms of obsessive compulsive disorder are divided into obsessions and compulsions:

Obsessions:
  • Worrying about dirt and germs.
  • Having violent thoughts towards yourself or others.
  • Worrying about harming others.
  • Need for balance (fearing that something bad will happen if everything is not even).
  • Unwanted thoughts and images (e.g. violent, sexual, religious or blasphemous).
Compulsions:
  • Routines (e.g. washing repeatedly, placing objects in a certain way or touching things in a specific order or at a certain time).
  • Correcting thoughts (e.g. counting to a certain number or saying a word or phrase aloud or in your mind).
  • Checking (e.g. doors are locked and lights are turned off).
  • Reassurance (always asking others to tell you that everything is fine).
