Acupuncture is an alternative medicine or treatment with a powerful component of traditional Chinese medicine. It is composed of various techniques, although the most well-known consists of inserting fine needles into the body at so-called acupuncture points.
The aim of this procedure is to stimulate certain anatomical points, thus influencing their performance. Acupuncturists affirm that these points correspond to the areas of the body’s surface which have greater electrical conductivity. Illnesses that can be treated by acupuncture. This technique is usually used to alleviate pain. In fact, it has been practiced in China and other Asian countries for thousands of years and it is still practised today. However, the fact that the theory and practice of acupuncture are not based on scientific knowledge has led to it being labelled as a type of pseudo-science. It has been proven that acupuncture is not effective against many diseases and some relate it to the placebo effect. However, it has been suggested that it could be effective against nausea caused by chemotherapy or idiopathic pain, among other types of pain. Although it can alleviate certain types of pain, there is no solid evidence that acupuncture is a totally effective treatment to combat them, seeing as it must always be complemented with therapy from a general practitioner.
