Dr Afzal Sohaib is a Consultant Cardiologist with a special interest in heart rhythm problems. Palpitations, blackouts (syncope), and heart rhythm problems such as atrial fibrillation can be quite distressing when a person first experiences them, especially when it is unclear why they are happening. Dr Sohaib applies a personalised approach to each individual patient to find the right tests to find the cause and right treatments for each person. These treatments may just be reassurance and advice, but sometimes medication is required, and in some people procedures such as pacemakers and implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICD) implantation or ablation procedures which he performs.
He qualified from the University College London (UCL) in 2005. After his studies, Dr Sohaib trained in leading teaching hospitals in London, including the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and Royal Brompton & Harefield Hospitals NHS Trust. He obtained a PhD from Imperial College. Aside from his NHS posts, Dr Sohaib attends private patients at the One Heart Clinic, Harley Street, London, Spire London East, and Chiswick Medical Centre. He performs procedures including ablations, pacemaker and defibrillator implants at The Harley Street Clinic, St Bartholomew's Hospital, The Wellington Hospital, and London Independent Hospital.
Dr Sohaib's research interests are in cardiac electrophysiology and cardiac devices. He has written a book in this area and has published numerous scientific peer reviewed articles. Furthermore, he has given speeches at national and international cardiology conferences. He has also assisted in improving the teaching and training of cardiology for medical students and junior doctors in the UK and Europe from roles he has held.
