Mr Richard Edwards is a leading consultant neurosurgeon in Bristol specialising in brain tumour, traumatic brain injuryhead injury, cranioplasty, awake brain surgery and lumbar microdiscectomy surgery.

Mr Edwards graduated in 1994 from the University of London and began his neurosurgical training at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. He gained additional experience at the Atkinson Morley’s Hospital before completing a formal residency program in Bristol in 2005. He later undertook a clinical fellowship in paediatric neurosurgery at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada in 2006, receiving specialised training in non-accidental head injuries in children. In 2010, he was awarded a Doctorate of Medicine by the University of London.

Mr Edwards has received various awards including the Vesalius Prize by the American Association of Neurological Surgeons in 2003. He is also a member of the UK Intercollegiate Examination Board in Neurosurgery and is a senior clinical lecturer at Bristol University.

He has a significant interest in hydrocephalus and head injury in both adults and children and was on the external advisory committee to the CMACE Head Injury in Children Study, assessing every child admitted to hospital with a head injury in the UK over six months and studied the factors associated with poor outcomes from head injuries. Additionally, Mr Edwards introduced a day-case spinal surgery service in Bristol in 2006 specialising in microdiscectomy and single-level lumbar decompression surgery.

A most thorough and sympathetic interaction, patient in explanation of the situation and possible implications. Setting up the requirements for the operation involved much chasing due to external pressures; these were done effectively.
