In his latest online article, Mr Simon Eccles gives us his insights into liposuction. He talks about what it is, the hospital stay, recovery duration and longevity of results.

What is liposuction?

Liposuction is a surgical intervention meticulously crafted to eliminate excess fatty tissue, facilitating the reshaping of the body. It's crucial to note that this surgery isn't a remedy for obesity, and individuals with substantial weight concerns are advised against undergoing this procedure.

Early acknowledgment of the constraints and probable outcomes of liposuction treatment is imperative. This well-established technique selectively removes fat from designated areas in a controlled manner. This involves guiding a suction cannula beneath the skin into the underlying fatty layers. Liposuction is notably effective in areas such as the abdomen, thighs, knees, flanks, and buttocks.

For minor reshaping of a specific area, surgery can be conducted using local anaesthetic and sedation. However, when addressing multiple areas, a general anaesthetic is typically administered.

During the consultation, it is essential to discuss with the doctor whether the desired areas will respond favourably to liposuction. Various techniques, including conventional, ultrasonic, or power-assisted liposuction, can be employed. Surgeons may have preferences, but all techniques aim to recontour or reshape specific body regions.

Postoperative days and weeks often entail noticeable bruising and swelling in treated areas. Taking one or two weeks off work is generally advisable, and patients are encouraged to wear supportive garments during this period to expedite the resolution of bruising and swelling, enhancing the smoothness of the final result.

Liposuction proves highly beneficial in well-selected areas featuring good skin quality and moderate fat deposits.

Hospital stay:

While many individuals prefer an overnight stay after surgery, numerous liposuction patients can return home on the same day.

Recovery duration:

Despite some mild discomfort and potential bruising, post-liposuction pain is typically minimal. Swelling may persist for a few weeks, and the final shape of the treated area becomes fully evident after approximately six months. Return to work is possible once comfort allows, but strenuous exercise and heavy lifting are discouraged in the initial weeks, as advised by Mr Eccles.

Longevity of results:

Liposuction yields lifelong results, but significant weight gain can lead to fat re-accumulation in treated areas. Mr Eccles can provide guidance on realistic expectations and achievable outcomes.
