Gastric balloon

Specialty of Surgery

The gastric balloon is a spherical silicone device that is introduced into the stomach of obese patients, particularly those who suffer from morbid obesity. The gastric balloon is introduced endoscopically and is filled with serum to let it reach the size of a ball. This way, it takes considerable room in the stomach, causing a feeling of satiation in the patient and its consequent decrease of hunger. Therefore, it is easier to maintain a diet aimed at slimming, reducing the intake of food. It is especially suitable for those patients who are obese and have tried to lose weight through other means. The gastric balloon is usually removed after six months, which is the maximum time indicated.
