What is Sjögren’s Syndrome?

Sjögren’s syndrome (pronounced Show-grins) is a condition that affects the parts of the body that produce fluids like tears and saliva. Usually, people most affected are those aged between 40-60 years old and women. The condition may occur in association with other autoimmune diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis or myositis and lung disease. Rheumatologist Dr Joel David talks about the symptoms of sjögren’s syndrome and how it can be treated.

Medical treatment of rheumatoid arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting approximately 1% of the population. It is characterised by inflammation of the synovial joints, such as the wrists, elbows, hips and knees. If left untreated, or inadequately treated, rheumatoid arthritis has the potential to cause disability, a reduced quality of life and a loss of work capacity. Professor Robert John Moots, a leading rheumatologist, discusses how one type of medication is having a positive resurgence in treating this complex condition.
