Professional statement
Miss Asifa Shaikh is a distinguished consultant ophthalmic surgeon with over 35 years of experience. Her areas of expertise include glaucoma, cataract surgery, general ophthalmology, corneal diseases, eyelid disorders, and ocular inflammatory conditions such as uveitis. Miss Shaikh consults privately at The Chiltern Hospital, The Shelburne Hospital, and Stoke Mandeville Hospital.
With a wealth of expertise, Miss Shaikh undertook postgraduate surgical training in ophthalmology on the prestigious Oxford Deanery. She furthered her skills through a post-CCT fellowship training in corneal and external eye diseases at The Western Eye Hospital, spanning 12 months, before going on to puruse additional sub-specialty fellowship training in the medical, surgical, and laser treatment of glaucoma at The Oxford Eye Hospital.
Miss Shaikh is highly proficient in all modalities of glaucoma treatment, including medical management, laser interventions such as SLT, ECP, Cyclodiode, and micro-pulse treatments, as well as penetrating drainage surgery and minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) procedures. Her adeptness extends to state-of-the-art, complex micro-incision cataract surgery, including the use of toric and premium multifocal implants. Notably, Miss Shaikh has particular specialism in cataract surgery in concurrent glaucoma cases, where the complexities of both eye conditions necessitate a tailored approach.
Currently, Miss Shaikh serves as the clinical lead for ophthalmology and the joint lead for glaucoma at Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust, where she also holds a consultant position since 2006. She has a Diploma in Ophthalmology from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and an MBBS from the University of Karnataka, obtained in 1987, and holds esteemed fellowship to both the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh.
