• Audits and Studies ​ OZURDEX A real life clinical practice study 2015 Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of dexamethasone intravitreal implant (DEX implant; OZURDEX, Allergan, Inc., Irvine, CA). Enrolment: Retrospective review was performed on the clinical records of 34 patients treated with intravitreal dexamethasone (Ozurdex®, Allergan) in SMH by Mr Abumattar.
• Audits and studies Pain scores following Intravitreal injection 2013 Purpose: To evaluate needle pain score following intravitreal injection. Enrolment: 81 patients attending Stoke Mandeville Hospital day case clean room for injection. Conclusions: Intravitreal injection pain is mild and not as feared . Allow adequate time for anaesthetic drops to take effect. Topical anaesthesia is safe, quick, and cost-effective. Proxymetacaine is a preferable topical drop. Addressing the patient's injection-related concerns, listening to them, reduce their anxiety and minimise their pain.
• Audits and Studies Cost of Last Minute Cancellations (LMC) in Ophthalmology to the Trust Purpose: find out what is Cost of Cancellation of operations on the day of intended surgery” 2012 / 2013 to the trust? Aim of the Study: Define the extent of Ophthalmology LMCs problem! Cost of ophthalmology LMCs to the Trust? Ascertain reasons for LMCs, and suggest recommendations to reduce them as this will have direct effect on the waiting list.
• Audits and Studies Botulinum toxin treatments in Wycombe Hospital patients Design of the study: This was a retrospective observational study to assess the subjective patient benefit of Botulinum toxin treatments for Blepharospasm. Jankovic clinical grading of severity of spasm was used. Results: 89.5% of patients experienced an improvement in symptoms. Other studies report improvements in symptoms in 85–95% of patients. ⋝15.7% of patients needed more than one initial visit to control the spasm. Ptosis was experienced in more than half of patients (other studies 58% mild +6.7% marked). This is important when counselling patients, especially Ptosis may prevent them from driving ​

• ECHoES clinical trial Mr Abumattar participated as a hospital ophthalmologist in this study. PROJECT TITLE: The effectiveness of Community vs. Hospital Eye Service follow-up for patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) with quiescent disease: a virtual trial. (The ECHoES trial) DESIGN: ECHoES is a virtual trial of ophthalmologists and optometrists decisions about the need for anti-VEGF retreatment in patients with nAMD. It is based on vignettes consisting of colour fundus and optical coherence tomography (OCT) images with accompanying clinical data. Vignettes created using information collected in a national comparative effectiveness trial of anti-VEGF drugs (the IVAN study), to mimic the characteristics of patients judged to be eligible for follow up in the community. Both groups will assess the same vignettes, viewing images and data and submitting their decisions via the internet. SETTING: Ophthalmologists decisions will represent the Hospital Eye Service (HES). Optometrists decisions will represent the community / primary care setting. CONCLUSIONS: Optometrists' ability to make nAMD retreatment decisions from vignettes is not inferior to ophthalmologists' ability. Shared care with optometrists monitoring quiescent nAMD lesions has the potential to reduce workload in hospitals PUBLICATION DATE: The main results paper for the ECHoES study published in the Eye online 9 October 2015 2)
• Safety and Efficacy of Bimatoprost to Treat Hypotrichosis of the Eyelashes after Application clinical trial Mr Abumattar worked as a sub investigator in this study This one-year study evaluates the long-term safety and effectiveness of Bimatoprost solution application to the eyelid margin to treat Hypotrichosis of the eyelashes. There were two different types of subjects participating in the study 1) Those with inadequate eyelashes due to natural causes or 2) Those with inadequate eyelashes following a complete course of chemotherapy treatment. There were two treatment periods of six months each. Subjects received either the study medication or vehicle in either of the two treatment periods. We had 368 subjects enrolled into the study, 334 subjects have completed their month 6 visit, and 142 subjects have completed their month 12 visit. Study type Interventional, Treatment, Randomized, Double Blind (Subject, Investigator, Outcomes Assessor), Parallel Assignment, Safety/Efficacy Study PRIMARY OUTCOME MEASURE: Percentage of Treatment Responders RESULTS: A higher percentage of subjects treated with bimatoprost 0.03% (78.1%) versus vehicle (18.4%) demonstrated at least a 1-grade increase in global eyelash assessment score at week 16 (P < .0001). Subjects in the bimatoprost 0.03% group also had statistically significantly greater increases in eyelash length, thickness, and darkness (P < .0001) than those in the vehicle group. For adverse events, only conjunctival hyperemia occurred at a statistically significant higher incidence rate in the bimatoprost 0.03% versus the vehicle group (P = .03). CONCLUSION: Bimatoprost 0.03% was found to be effective at enhancing eyelashes in adults with a very good safety profile
