Mr Rao Khalid Mehmood

Professional statement

Mr Rao Khalid Mehmood is a leading laparoscopic colorectal and general surgical consultant in Leeds. He specialises in rectal bleeding, piles (haemorrhoids) and anal fissure as well as colon cancer, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and ulcerative colitis. He privately practises at Nuffield Health Leeds Hospital and his NHS base is Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation where he is the clinical lead for general and urological services. 

Mr Mehmood is highly qualified with an MBBS, FRCSEd, and an MS from the University of London. Furthermore, he has been awarded a FRCSEd (General Surgery) and a PG Cert in Medical Education. He completed his basic surgical and specialist registrar training after his MBBS, and has gathered more than 15 years of experience in general surgery and 10 years in laparoscopic surgery.

Additionally, he also received specialist training in laparoscopic and open colorectal surgery, completing training courses in advanced laparoscopic and colorectal surgery in Germany, Switzerland and the UK. 

Mr Mehmood's research has been published in various peer reviewed journals and his MS thesis in investigating the independent predictive marker for platinum-based chemotherapy in oesophageal cancers was published in 2007. He is also a renowned name in teaching, where he is a tutor in laparoscopic surgery to junior surgeons at his NHS trust, and he is a member of the British Medical Association.
